Mira Mesa Man Pleads Not Guilty In Jesus Statue Defacing Case
(SCCN) December 21, 2006 -- A 20-year old Mira Mesa man who reportedly already admitted defacing of a statue of Jesus Christ pleaded "not guilty" in San Diego Superior Court . The marble statue stands outside the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in on Gold Coast Drive in Mira Mesa.
Detectives say 20-year-old Alix Rolland admitted to vandalizing the statue with a permanent marker on December seventh. The graffiti included obscenities, satanic symbols, and a swastika. Church officials say they have not been able to remove the damage, which adds up to an estimated $40,000.
Tips to Crimestoppers helped secure the arrest, and police say the suspect has implicated two juveniles as well. Police say they plan to arrest the two.
Superior Court Judge David Szumowski is allowing Rolland to remain free on bail. Rolland must return to court February 5 for a readiness conference, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 19.
If convicted, Rolland faces up to seven years in prison.
